Alternations to dismissal rules 'could encourage business'

Date: 27/10/2011

Changes to dismissal rules in the UK could encourage companies to take on more staff members and purchase additional 0800 numbers.

Director-general at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) John Longworth claimed many enterprises are afraid to employ more people because they are worried about the potential cost of tribunal cases.

This needs to change as it is hampering growth at a time when the country needs it the most, he explained.

"Over 70 per cent of firms see dismissal rules as burdensome to their business," Mr Longworth continued.

"A clear new dismissal route will help employers hire with confidence."

The BCC had previously called for the government to reduce business regulation and welcomed a recent speech given by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg on the matter.

Mr Longworth added that proposals submitted by Adrian Beecroft to change dismissal rules need to be given serious consideration from those at the top of the coalition.
