BCC: Govt must relax current employment laws

Date: 23/11/2011

Companies looking to expand and purchase new local numbers may agree with the comments of one organisation that employment regulations should be relaxed.

Dr Adam Marshall, director of policy at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said the current rules create "uncertainty" for businesses and prevent them from growing and creating jobs.

He welcomed a package of changes announced by business secretary Vince Cable and acknowledged they do address some of the concerns enterprises currently have.

However, they must be implemented quickly.

"Tribunal reforms, simplified compromise agreements and 'protected conversations' between employers and employees would help companies create jobs and deliver growth," Dr Marshall stated.

The expert also believes it would be beneficial to consider the idea of a fast-track scheme for simple Tribunal claims, meaning they would be dealt with in three months, as this would benefit both employers and claimants.

Chief economist at the BCC David Kern recently welcomed the Monetary Policy Committee's decision to increase the quantitative easing programme to £275 billion, however he said enterprises still need greater funding.
