BT announces call charge price rise

Date: 30/08/2011

People purchasing new local numbers may be interested to know BT is increasing its call charges.

The telecoms provider has revealed the cost of calls for residential customers will go up by five per cent at the beginning of September.

Although the organisation claims charges will be frozen until 2013 following the change, it will be the third increase it has introduced so far this year

The cost of making a call from a UK landline is set to go up from 7.6p a minute to 7.95p per minute, with line rental charges also rising.

Michael Phillips, product director at consumer phone site Homephonechoices.co.uk, said he is disappointed by the announcement.

"While BT's price increase may be in line with inflation, it will prove very unpopular with households who are already feeling the pinch," he stated.

Calls made to mobile phones will not be affected by the changes.

Earlier this year, residents of Horncliffe were forced to use their mobiles for all calls after work to reroute BT cables was delayed by more than two weeks, the Berwick Advertiser reported.
