BT to expand Midlands call centre

Date: 22/11/2011

BT may need additional non-geographic numbers, as it is expanding its call centre operations.

The firm is taking on more than 300 extra members of staff for customer service roles at its site in West Bromwich, Sandwell.

Following discussions with the Communications Workers Union (CWU) BT created the permanent roles in a bid to provide local employment opportunities and contribute to the regeneration of the area.

New staff members will start their jobs at the beginning of 2012.

BT chief executive Ian Livingston said the "fact BT is bringing more than 300 further roles to the area is great news and is a reflection of the efforts and cooperation of both the CWU and Sandwell council".

He added the positions will be particularly welcome given the currently difficult state of the jobs market in Britain.

There was also good news for workers at the Northern Rock call centre in Sunderland this week, as Virgin revealed it will be retaining all staff members following its takeover of the bank, the Sunderland Echo reported.
