Co-operative Travel call centre relocating to Peterborough

Date: 24/10/2011

Co-operative Travel may need to purchase new 0800 telephone numbers as it is relocating its call centre operations to Peterborough.

The enterprise has merged with Thomas Cook and, as a result, is moving its headquarters.

This means jobs based in Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Ilkeston and Lichfield are likely to be lost and a 90-day consultation has now begun with some employees.

However, 120 staff members will be kept on at the site in Burslem.

Usdaw union official Sharon Ainsworth said her organisation is "pleased" these jobs have been retained.

Despite this, they will "not fill the hole left by the relocation of its head office", she added.

Earlier this month, Wokingham Borough Council won the accolade for being the leading local authority for telephone and email communication in the UK at the 2011 Top 50 Call Centres for Customer Service Awards.

This is the second year in a row the body has picked up the prize.
