Expansion plans submitted for Welsh surgeries

Date: 28/07/2011

New 0300 numbers may be required by two GP surgeries in Wales if expansion initiatives go ahead.

Dixton Surgery in Monmouth and Magor Surgery could both receive new facilities and services providing redevelopment plans from Aneurin Bevan Health Board are approved, the South Wales Argus reports.

New housing developments in the area mean Magor's patient list is set to expand to 8,800 individuals, from the current figure of 7,000.

The Dixton site currently serves 3,705 patients and although it has been extended three times over the past 20 years, there is no room left for any building work.

Furthermore, both practices are incapable of meeting health and safety and infection control standards.

The plans will need to be approved by the Welsh government before any changes can go ahead.

Another surgery that may require 03 numbers is East Bank Medical Centre in Arbourthorne, as it recently opened and is set to treat around 4,000 patients, the Star reported.
