Homeless charity praised for new freephone number

Date: 13/01/2012

Charities looking to improve their services may be inspired to invest in 0800 numbers after hearing how one organisation has introduced a freephone helpline.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the Simon Community has launched the new contact number for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, the Derry Journal reports.

Sinn Fein councillor Colly Kelly praised the move, claiming it is "in addition to the other outstanding work" performed by the charity.

"The Simon Community are always at hand to respond to the needs of the homeless people and they provide an absolutely vital role," Mr Kelly stated.

Founded in 1963 by Anton Wallich-Clifford, the charity operates in both the UK and Ireland.

Mr Kelly applauded the organisation's work on caring for the welfare of homeless people and providing initiatives such as a direct access hostel, care services and community support services.
