In a bid to reduce inappropriate calls to the emergency services this festive season, the public have been urged to phone GPs on local numbers or visit minor injuries units rather than dial 999.
The York Press reports how Yorkshire Ambulance Service is appealing for people to consider more appropriate healthcare services such as NHS Direct when they are suffering from a minor ailment.
Chief executive of the Ambulance Service David Whiting explained how demand on paramedics is set to increase during Christmas and New Year, as cold weather and festive celebrations lead to a rise in incidents.
While he urged people to call 999 if critical help is required, it was noted by emergency department consultant at York Teaching Hospital NHS Trust Michael Williams that other services can help non-urgent cases.
For example NHS Direct has a phone line dedicated purely to answering medical queries and offering free confidential advice on symptoms and treatments, which customers pay a low rate to call.
