With people leading increasingly busy lives, their phone books or organisers are likely to be full to the brim with contact numbers for both friends and businesses.
As a result, companies may be looking for a way to ensure they stand out from the crowd and become the first port of call for individuals looking for a certain service.
New non-geographic numbers could be the perfect way for them to do this, as they are designed to be as memorable as possible.
There are several different prefixes to choose from, each of which has slightly different properties depending on the type of organisation it is being used by and what they want to achieve.
Both local phone numbers and 0300 or 0333 prefixes are free to call from both landlines and mobiles - something that is bound to make them attractive to those on the go.
Alternatively, 0800 numbers are free to contact, as are 0808 numbers, which were introduced by Ofcom when the former digits started running out.
If none of these appeal, 0844 could be the perfect choice as they allow companies to make money from every call they receive.
